Making Value Visible
A multi-phased professional development program
designed to enhance documentation and assessment skills in the ARTS
Teaching Artist Tim Kulik, Art Instructor for The Cultural Arts Center, has just completed the “Making Value Visible” three day workshop which was a great success. All the artists who attended the training were very privileged to be instructed by three highly qualified individuals: Deb Brzoska (Kennedy-Center Teaching Artist), Nancy Brown (Technology Specialist), and Diana Green (Arts Curriculum Specialist).
Throughout all the training which focused on integrating the arts into various academic courses and designing activities which can be qualitatively and quantitatively assessed, all of the participants formed strong bonds of friendship, reinforcing the belief that the arts enhance the learning experience. Many goals were discussed and will be reevaluated during each of the three Follow-Up Webinars scheduled for Jan. 21, March 4, and May 6, 2010. Additionally, there will be a 2-day Workshop in Montgomery for all MVV teachers/artists on July 14-15, 2010.
The Cultural Arts Center currently has three teaching artists involved in the classrooms at Grandview and Faine Elementary Schools through a grant partnership with the Dothan City Schools and Wiregrass Foundation. Susan Brolund, theater teaching artist, uses theater to connect to reading content standards, while Alberta Keener and Tim Kulik use the visual arts to connect to science and math content standards. This opportunity for the students in these two elementary schools is a first, and the program is in its infancy as the Cultural Arts Center works to bring the arts to the schools when ordinarily these lessons could not be provided to the students.
