Registration for Arts Classes
Now – February 1
The Cultural Arts Center will be hosting a variety of arts classes at their center for adults and children alike. Classes in dance, pottery, visual, textile and metal art will be available to the community. Registration will be open now till February 1.  Forms can be picked up at the Cultural Arts Center, 909 S. St. Andrews Street, Dothan, AL, 36301, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Winter Pottery Classes
February 2 – March 8
Pottery classes for both children and adults will be offered beginning February 2  and ending March 8. Pottery classes will be led by local pottery artist, Lynn Koning. Classes are broken down by skills and all classes include firing fees. Advanced children’s level classes will also include glazing with color and use of the wheel. All Adult level classes will offer the opportunity to try both hand molding and wheel creation of items and will include color glazing and firing costs. Registration is required .

Children’s Pottery Classes

Beginner children’s pottery classes are for the student who has never taken a pottery class before or who has only had 6-8 sessions in a previous pottery class, and who are 3rd grade and up. Students in this class will learn/continue to improve hand molding of clay, increase their use of tools for design, and learn to glaze their items. Some of the items to be created by the students are wind chimes, small animals, and pencil holders. This class runs from 3:30 to 4:30 every Thursday afternoon beginning February 2 and ending March 8. Cost for this class is $40 per student and payment is required at registration.

Advanced children’s pottery classes are for the student who has taken pottery classes before for more than 8 sessions, who demonstrate knowledge of and interest in working with a pottery wheel, and who are 4th grade and up. Students in this class will continue to increase their knowledge of hand molding of clay, improve their use of tools for design, improve color glaze application, learn basic wheel techniques, and work to create a design pattern of their own as they create bowls, vases, and decorative plateware for the table. This class runs from 4:30 to 5:30 every Thursday afternoon beginning February 2 and ending March 8. Cost for this class is $50 per student and payment is required at registration.

Adult Pottery Classes

Adult pottery classes
are for students with all levels of interest and skills who want to work with clay through hand molding or on the wheel if possible. Students in this class will work to create tableware items both decorative and functional in an effort to create their own style of design through use of tools, items of nature, and imprint designs, and includes color glazing and firing costs. This class runs from 5:30 to 7:00 every Thursday night beginning February 2 and ending March 8. Cost for this class is $65 per student and payment is required at registration.

Visual, Textile, & Metal Art classes will be led by a variety of area artists.  Visual Art will be led by local mural artist, Tim Kulik, and are geared towards the young artist who just wants to explore a variety of mediums and techniques, and the more serious artist looking to improve their basic art skills. Textile art will be led by Alberta Keener and Bonnie Zander, textile and fiber artists with experience as art educators in the area. Metal art will be led by Rosa Hubbard Kulik, local glass and metal artist who will teach adults the art of jewelry making with a “twist”.

Children’s Visual Art classes

Young Artist class is aimed at 1st through 3rd graders who want to explore a variety of art mediums (paper, acrylic, chalk, watercolor), use a variety of techniques with these mediums (collage, finger painting, brush, fruits and other odd items) and create both one dimensional and 3 dimensional works of art. Each week students in this class will create a work of art around a basic element of design and using a variety of subject matter. This class will meet Thursday’s from 3:30 to 4:30 beginning February 2 and ending March 8. Cost for this class is $40 and includes all supplies. Payment is required at registration.

Transitions class is aimed at the more serious artist grades 4th and up who want to improve both their sketching and drawing techniques, improve their eye for perspectives and design, and learn to transition their drawings into works of art using a variety of art mediums, tools, and techniques to create their work of art. This class will meet Thursday’s from 4:30-5:30 beginning February 2 and ending March 8.  Cost for this class is $30 and students will need to bring with them their own sketch pad/book and sketching pencils to each class. Payment is required at registration.

Adult Art Classes

Sketching Adult Art classes are designed for adults of all ages that just wanted to try drawing and sketching as a first step into art. Under the skillful eye of Tim Kulik, adults will sketch to improve their “eye” (perspective) and line of design, as well as their use of various tools for sketching. By the end of this 6 week session, students should be able to see an improvement in their drawing skills as repetition and practice is the greatest tool of the artist. Classes will meet Thursday’s from 6:00-7:00 beginning February 2 and ending March 8. Cost for this class is $40 and students will need to bring with them to each class their own sketch pad/book and sketching pencils. Payment is required at registration.

Textile Surface Design Art Classes

The Art of Jewelry Making classes for adults will be taught by Rosa Hubbard Kulik and designed for the entry level student who has never made jewelry other than macaroni noodle bracelets in school to the more experienced jewelry maker who would like to learn some new twists in the use of new materials and beads. This class will begin Thursday February 2 and end March 8 from 6:00-7:00. Students will purchase on site kits that contain all the materials to make the specified jewelry item, but with choices of color and materials. Cost of each kit is $15. Students will need to bring with them 1-round nose plier, 1- chain nose plier, and 1-wire cutter, all available in the jewelry and bead section of Michaels or Hobby Lobby. Cost to attend the class is $30 for the 6 week session. Payment is required at registration and payment for kits will not be necessary until first night of class.

Dance Classes will be offered for both children and adults in Latin and Ballroom dances and even Zumba Dance will be available for children of all ages as a fun way to get a bit of exercise in while learning basic dance steps. Our dance instructors, Marta Verde and Gene and Marilyn Somers, offer “try one class for free” as a way to determine if you will enjoy the instruction and group dynamics.

Dress Attire for Latin classes, basic clothing and non-rubber soled shoes are needed. For ballroom dancing, basic clothing and non-rubber soled shoes, heels for women, are needed. For kids Zumba classes, loose clothing and tennis shoes are needed.

Children’s Dance Classes

After School Zumba will be held Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of each week beginning January 23 from 4:00-5:00 in the Cultural Arts Center Dance Studio and is available to school age children of all ages/grades. Classes will continue through March 28, (No classes February 20-22) . Cost for the class is $3 per class payable at each class or $8 a week to attend all three classes for the week.

Teen Latin Line dance will be held Monday and Tuesdays of each week beginning January 23 from 5:00-6:00 in the Cultural Arts Center Dance Studio and is available to all teen aged children. Classes will continue through March 27, (No class of February 20). Cost for the class is $5 per class payable at each class or $8 a week to attend both classes for the week.

Teen Ballroom dance will be held Wednesdays only of each week beginning January 25 through February 25 from 5:00-6:00 in the Cultural Arts Center Dance Studio and is available to teens age 10-18 years of age.  The class will culminate in a Teen Ballroom Dance February 24 in the Cultural Arts Center Banquet Hall complete with dress up and festivities. Cost for the class is $8 per class or $35 a month. Due to the shortness of the class session, commitment to attendance is necessary for all.

Adult Dance Classes

Adult Ballroom will be held Thursdays of each beginning January 12 through March 1 from 7:00 to 8:30 in the Cultural Arts Center Dance Studio. Classes will run in 8 week sessions with a 3-4 week break in between. Gene and Marilyn Somers, Ballroom Dance Instructor, will teach 4 American ballroom dances and 6 Latin Ballroom dance in a 2 year cycle should you commit to the class schedules. At the end of each 8 week session, there will be an adult dance party in the Cultural Arts Center Banquet Hall for students in the class. Partners are not necessary, but are encouraged.
